What distinguishes the Joanna Duda Trio within contemporary jazz is a rare balance: music that is both demanding and bold, yet communicative and full of emotion. The group combines multi-part compositional forms with open improvisation, taking care to maintain both narrative coherence and a lively, spontaneous on-stage dialogue. The result is a sound that operates on many levels - intellectual and emotional, abstract and direct - making the Trio’s concerts an intense experience for listeners.
Joanna Duda founded the Trio in 2017, with the idea that the sound would become the ensemble’s hallmark and its defining quality. She treats the jazz trio format as one of many conventions she explores alongside Jort Terwijn (double bass) and Michał Bryndal (drums). All the band members also incorporate electronic elements – effects, samplers, and sequencers. Joanna Duda Trio has, in recent years, firmly established itself on the European music scene, regularly performing at major jazz festivals that champion innovative approaches to jazz and improvisational music, such as Berlin JazzFest, Jazzweek Cologne, Leipziger Jazztage, Jazztopad, and International Jazz Platform. The group has played on some of the most prestigious jazz stages across Europe, including Porgy & Bess in Vienna, Opus Jazz Club in Budapest, Le Periscope in Lyon, Ronnie Scott’s in London, as well as in the USA at Dizzy’s Jazz Club in New York.
